Understanding Lateral Epicondylitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Osteopathic Solutions

Lateral epicondylitis, commonly referred to as tennis elbow, is a condition that causes pain and discomfort on the outer part of the elbow. What is Lateral Epicondylitis?

Lateral epicondylitis is a tendinopathy injury involving the extensor muscles of the forearm and is the most common overuse syndrome in the elbow. It occurs when the tendons in the elbow are overloaded, leading to chronic stress and resulting in inflammation and microtears. Repetitive activities such as heavy lifting, computer use, repetitive vibration or repeatedly twisting your wrist can strain the tendons in the elbow causing pain and tenderness. Despite its name, tennis elbow isn't exclusive to tennis players and can affect anyone whose activities involve repetitive arm movements or gripping actions. Other sports such as baseball, swimming, squash and field throwing sports are prone to developing this condition. Additionally, jobs with repetitive unilateral movements such as electricians, carpenters, gardeners, landscapers and desk bound jobs commonly present with this condition.

Symptoms of Lateral Epicondylitis:

·      Pain: Persistent pain on the outer part of the elbow, which may radiate down the forearm.

·      Weak Grip: Difficulty gripping or holding objects, particularly with extension of the wrist.

·      Stiffness: Stiffness in the elbow joint, especially after periods of rest.

·      Tenderness: Sensitivity or tenderness around the bony knob on the outer part of the elbow.

Symptoms may progress in the following manner:

1.    Dull pain a few hours after the aggravating activity.

2.    Pain at the end or immediately after the aggravating activity.

3.    Pain during the aggravating activity, which intensifies after stopping that activity.

4.    Constant pain, which prohibits any activity.

Symptoms last, on average, from 2 weeks to 2 years.

Osteopathic Approach to Lateral Epicondylitis:
