TENS Machines: How They Work and When to Use Them for Pain Relief
If you’ve ever experienced persistent pain or muscle tension, you might have come across something called a TENS machine. But what exactly is it, and how can it support your recovery?
At Tugun Osteopathy, we often get questions about non-invasive tools that complement hands-on treatment. One such option is the TENS machine, a small but powerful device that can help manage pain and support your overall treatment plan.
What Is a TENS Machine?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A TENS machine is a portable device that delivers mild electrical impulses through the skin using adhesive electrodes that aims to reduce symptomatic pain. These impulses stimulate the nerves in the affected area and can help block or reduce pain signals sent to the brain.
It’s a safe, drug-free way to help reduce discomfort from a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.
How Does It Work?
There are two main theories behind how TENS machines help with pain:
1. Pain Gate Theory – The electrical stimulation from a TENS machine can “distract” your nervous system by “closing the gate” to pain signals at the spinal cord level, reducing the sensation of pain.
2. Endorphin Release – TENS may also stimulate the release of endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers, which can create a lasting effect even after the machine is turned off.
Conditions TENS Machines Can Help With
TENS machines are commonly used to manage:
Lower back pain
Neck and shoulder tension
Joint pain, including osteoarthritis
Post-injury muscle soreness
Sciatica
Chronic pain conditions
Labour pains
While it doesn’t cure the underlying issue, it can provide significant symptom relief and support your recovery between osteopathic treatments.
How TENS Fits Into Osteopathic Care
TENS therapy isn’t a replacement for hands-on treatment, but it can be a useful addition to your care plan. In our clinic, we sometimes recommend TENS machines for home use when appropriate, especially if you’re managing ongoing pain or need support between appointments.
Is It Right for You?
TENS machines are generally safe for most people, but they aren’t suitable for everyone. You should avoid using one if you:
Have a pacemaker or implanted medical device
Are pregnant (unless advised by a health professional)
Have epilepsy
Use it over broken or irritated skin
Before using a TENS machine, it’s best to consult with your Osteopath to determine whether it’s appropriate for your specific condition.
If you’re curious about using a TENS machine or looking for drug-free ways to manage pain, speak with one of our osteopaths. We’ll assess your condition and create a personalised plan to support your recovery and mobility.
