How to Build a Good Sleep Routine

We all know how amazing it feels to wake up refreshed after a solid night’s sleep, yet for many people, good sleep can feel out of reach. Busy schedules, screens, and stress can easily throw off your body’s natural rhythm.

At Tugun Osteopathy, we see firsthand how poor sleep can affect everything from pain levels to posture and energy. The good news? A consistent, healthy sleep routine can help restore balance and support your overall wellbeing.

1. Keep a Consistent Schedule

Your body loves rhythm. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day even on weekends. This helps your circadian rhythm (your internal body clock) stay aligned, improving sleep quality and morning alertness.

2. Create a Calm Pre-Sleep Routine

Wind down gently before bed to signal to your body that it’s time to rest.

Some ideas:

  • Light stretching or gentle breathing exercises

  • Reading a few pages of a book (not a screen)

  • Listening to calming music or a podcast

  • A warm shower or magnesium bath

Avoid scrolling or replying to messages, blue light and stimulation make it harder for your brain to switch off.

3. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol

Caffeine can stay in your system for 6–8 hours, so avoid it in the afternoon.

Alcohol might make you drowsy initially, but it fragments sleep and prevents the deep, restorative stages your body needs for repair and recovery.

4. Make Your Room Sleep-Friendly

  • Keep your bedroom cool and clutter-free

  • Use soft lighting in the evening

  • Leave your phone on “do not disturb” or outside the bedroom

And yes consider leaving your blinds slightly open so natural morning light can help you wake up gently.

5. Move During the Day

Regular physical activity even a walk or light stretching can improve sleep quality. Movement reduces muscle tension, lowers stress hormones, and helps your body feel ready for rest at night.

6. Address Pain or Discomfort

Musculoskeletal pain, tension, or poor posture can easily disturb sleep. Osteopathic treatment can help release restrictions, ease muscle tightness, and support better body alignment making it easier to relax and stay comfortable through the night.

Better Sleep = Better Health

Good sleep isn’t just about feeling rested, it’s when your body repairs tissues, balances hormones, and resets your nervous system.

By developing a consistent, calming sleep routine, you support both your mental and physical wellbeing.

At Tugun Osteopathy, we’re here to help you move, rest, and recover better. If pain or tension is disrupting your sleep, an osteopathic assessment can help identify the underlying causes and support your body’s natural healing rhythm.
