Bicarb Soda Injections

At Tugun Osteopathy, we’re always exploring evidence-informed, supportive therapies that may complement hands-on osteopathic care. One treatment that’s generating increasing interest is bicarb soda injections also known as sodium bicarbonate injections for their potential role in managing pain and inflammation.

What Are Bicarb Soda Injections?

Bicarb soda injections involve injecting a sterile solution of sodium bicarbonate (yes, the same compound found in your kitchen cupboard) into specific soft tissue or joint areas. While it might sound simple, this therapy is thought to have potential benefits in reducing local acidity in inflamed or irritated tissues.

Why Consider Bicarb Soda Injections for Pain?

Inflammation in muscles, tendons, or joints often leads to an increase in local tissue acidity. This lower pH can aggravate pain-sensitive nerves and contribute to ongoing discomfort. Bicarbonate is a natural alkaline substance, so the theory is that injecting bicarb soda can help neutralise local acidity, reduce irritation, and potentially support the body’s natural healing processes.

Some practitioners use bicarbonate injections for chronic pain, particularly in cases of:

  • Tendinopathy or tendon irritation

  • Localised muscle trigger points

  • Persistent soft tissue inflammation

  • Post-injury recovery where inflammation is a limiting factor

  • & to remove excess amounts of certain substances i.e lactic acid

Is It Backed by Science?

While formal large-scale research is still emerging, anecdotal and early clinical reports suggest bicarb soda injections may offer a natural alternative for some individuals who prefer low-intervention pain relief options. They are sometimes used alongside other treatments like dry needling, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercise.

As with all treatments, results can vary, and bicarb injections are not a stand-alone solution. Instead, they’re considered part of a broader treatment plan tailored to your condition.

 Are Bicarb Soda Injections Safe?

In qualified hands and when used appropriately, bicarb injections are generally considered safe. However, they should only be administered by trained professionals. Possible minor side effects may include temporary discomfort at the injection site, mild bruising, or a transient increase in sensitivity.

We always conduct a full clinical assessment and discuss all options including risks and benefits before recommending any adjunct treatment.
